Constance Masters is visiting me today for an author interview, talking about how she got started and why she writes spanking romance/DD 🙂
Welcome Constance :).
How did you get started writing?
I started writing fanfiction actually. My daughter used to read stories on Fanfictionnet so I checked it out. I’d never heard of it (fanfiction) but when I realised you could actually rewrite the shows and have them end up the way you wanted them to I was hooked. You can imagine how mine ended up… I have quite a lot of stories over there under the name of chelsea1234. I have to tell you though some of the earlier ones were rough.
I’m quite sure I can imagine exactly how they ended up ;). What made you choose spanking romance/DD?
It was an easy choice really. That’s what I love to read. When I read books before I found spanking romance, I always used to feel like the spankings had been left out, that there was something missing.
What was the best piece of writing advice you received?
I think that would have to be to write what you like. I’ve also had a lot of technical advice from James from Stormy Night Publications. If something isn’t right he will tell you why and how you can best fix it.
What do you think makes good erotica?
For me, I think it has a lot to do with the connection of the characters. There has to be chemistry. If it feels too technical when you’re writing it, then it’s probably going to feel that way to the reader.
Where do you get your ideas and your characters from?
Sometimes an idea just comes to me. The characters are already in my head. Sometimes the plot comes first and I have to insert the characters.
Following on from that, where did you get the idea for His Firm Guidance from?
The start of the plot was actually given to me by James from Stormy Night. I went with it from there.
What do you think makes a good sex scene?
Once again I think it needs to come back to chemistry. I think a good sex scene is more than what goes where. It has to be sensual. I like description. It’s all about touch and feel, taste etc.
Yes it is. Do you have a writing routine? Do you need absolute quiet to write or background music/noise?
Well, I have a routine of sorts. I do promotion, the general things I have to do around the house and then I write. I would love to have absolute quiet but that doesn’t happen until late at night. I’m used to writing with background noise but if it gets too much I put on music and headphones to drown them all out. Yelling “I’m trying to write” helps for a few minutes here and there.
Sounds hectic! Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if so, how do you get over it?
Definitely. I think it happens more if I don’t write for a few days. I tend to read back over the last couple of chapters and see if I can get the feel of where I was up to. If that doesn’t work I go back and write one of my fanfictions. I think you have to switch the writing part of your brain back on somehow.
Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I think I’m a pantser with plotting tendencies if that makes sense.
That makes complete sense to me. I’m the same :). What do you like most about being a writer?
My first thought was everything. I think it’s the creative outlet. I like being able to weave stories and have them turn out the way I want.
Out of all your books, do you think you could pick a favourite and why?
No, not really. Asking me to choose would be like asking me to pick which one of my children was my favourite. I hope I’ve improved since I wrote my first book Becky’s Last Chance but it will never be any less special that the others because it was my first one and the first time I saw a cover with my name on it.
What do you do when you’re not writing?
I spend time with my family. I love TV, reality TV is my favourite. I read, cook… See friends when I can.
What’s next for you?
At the moment I’m working on a book about a girl who is not happy when her widowed Mom tells her that not only is she going on a cruise with a man she’s been seeing but that she is selling the family home. Alyssa doesn’t tell her Mom that she’s been suspended from college for bad grades. Instead she hitches a ride home to spend a couple of quiet weeks in the home she loves. Obviously things don’t go to plan, they never do lol.
Thank you so much for having me Liv. I had a blast 🙂
I did too :). I love the sound of your current book. Thank you for visiting!
