Now read on for a great interview with Sara :):

How did you get started writing?

I used to be an actor but I drifted away from it as my family grew and raising my children took center stage but I missed having a creative outlet. A few years ago, I decided to pick up writing again. I wrote when I was younger and when I first went to college my goal was to write for film and television but then I got bitten by the acting bug. I guess you could say that I’ve gotten back to my roots.

What was the best piece of writing advice you received?

“You can’t edit a blank page.” and “Put your butt in the chair and write.” Those are the two best pieces of advice because they are spot on!

What do you think makes good paranormal romance?

The paranormal element has to be essential to the romance. In other words, if you could lift the paranormal aspect out of the story and still have a romance…then it’s not a paranormal romance. The paranormal bits are woven throughout every fiber of the tale–the blood and bone of it. Also, whatever rules you create you have to stick to…unless you’ve got a really good reason to bend them. But readers will call you out on it if it doesn’t jive with the world you built.

Where do you get your ideas and your characters from and how did you come up with the plot for Unclaimed?

The characters come to me first and then the plot emerges from the characters. I learned a long time ago to listen to them and what they want. For every book I create a synopsis as part of the launch materials to give to my publisher but that always changes. I have a general idea in my mind, a map so to speak, but once I start writing the characters lead the way.

Who would play Tatiana and Dominic in the film of the book, and why?

Ashley Greene looks like Tatiana and she’s a smart beauty with fire in her belly–that’s Tatiana. I think Karl Urban would be a deliciously decadent choice for Dominic. He’s gruff, sexy, edgy, smart and a wise ass. That’s my Dominic to a “T”.

Do you have any advice for new writers of paranormal romance?

Follow your passion and build a world you would love to read about and never, ever give up!

Do you have a writing routine? Do you need absolute quiet to write or background music/noise?

Coffee and quiet are usually my top two requirements but sometimes I like music–instrumental only.

Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if so, how do you get over it?

I step away from the computer and take a break because otherwise I end up spinning my wheels.  The breakthrough idea usually comes to me at about five in the morning when I’m waking up and my head is the most clear.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Both. I plot a basic idea but then I write as the characters drive it…so that’s kinda pantsing it.

What do you like most about being a writer?

The creative wonderland that I get it play in is wonderful and I love working from home. I have four boys and this career has allowed me so much flexibility.

What do you do when you’re not writing?

Kids. Laundry. Cleaning. Some reading and television. Date night with the hubby.

What’s next for you?

VAMPIRE TROUBLE, the second Dead in the City book will be out in July 2014 and then an UNBOUND, Amoveo Legend novella, in December 2014. In between those books, LUCIFER: Demon of Pride, the second book in my Princes of Hell series should be released and in 2015 I have a new contemporary romance series coming called The McGuire Brothers. The first book in that series is called BRAVE THE HEAT and will be released in March 2015.I love hearing from my readers, so please come by my website or FB and say hi!
